IxD, IA Resume Writing
I’ve recently found myself in that familiar yet not particularly pleasant situation where I realize, yup, time to update the ol’ resume/CV.
As an interaction designer who is used to evaluating the usability of just about everything, I find myself questioning whether the well established, de facto format of the resume is really optimal fo…
How generic should a task flow diagram be?
What are your thoughts about documenting task flow when a new feature is being added to an existing product. Should the diagram be so generic that it could apply to any similar product or should it acknowledge the existing product’s features and include mention of them?
Sitemap Design: number convention for new screens vs. screen with multiple views
Hi All,
When creating a sitemap, what is your numbering convention for new screens, versus just a different view on the same screen?
For example, if you have a Home page (let’s call it 1.0) that has a Filter/Sort function and an Edit function, do you assign a screen number for the Filter/Sort to be 1.1, and the Edit screen to be 1.2? Or, do you…

What is the best application to use for generating UI Specs?
Hi-
I am just re-entering the workforce after a long maternity leave and I am looking at my old UI spec templates and am wondering what the current trend is with these. Previously I had been using Illustrator layers and then saving each one as a pdf and then using distiller to create a pdf document. Totally clunky I know.
I’ve been …

I’m due to start a ‘top-up’ engineering degree (BEng) shortly and am looking to specialise in Systems and Complexity.
I’m just wondering if there are any information architecture people who have a background in systems engineering? Is it an appropriate cross-over? I’d have tho…
Usability of phone trees?
Hi all,
Since the Search function doesn’t seem to be working for me… does anyone know of good studies on the constraints, considerations, features affecting usability of phone trees or voice UIs on mobile phones? I’m starting work on a project to help non-literate populations access vote matching systems on mobile phones.

update button
Hi,
I am designing a screen which displays detailed information about a ‘thing’ but that can also be used to update these details. i.e. the fields in the screen are read-write (for admin level users.)
I seem to have 4 options of how to design this;
1. I can have a button that says ‘Apply Changes’ which only be…
Scrollbars...
So I am hoping someone can help me with this. A few days ago I came across a site (or at least I think I did) where there was a list of elements on a page that required scrolling. Now the scrollbar would appear only when my mouse was on the list. The moment my mouse rolled off, the scroll bars would disappear, making the page design more cohesive by not adding…

Page ratings/rank: displaying data by default or not?
Hi all,
Curious to find some input here as I can’t find any other data elsewhere. On a particular site that lets its users rate any particular pages “Usefulness”, is it more prudent to show ratings on page load or to have it hidden until a user selects a rating themselves?
My concern is that by displaying ratings by defa…

Global navigation? Or not?
I’m trying to convince a client to get rid of global navigation. But she insists, legitimately, that with search every page becomes a homepage. However, with the predominance of search and navigation on mobile devices, I think users are either using the search bar or going back to the home page to look for global navigation. What do you think? Has anyone…
Information Architecture Defintion late 2010?
A few thoughts/questions:
Any pearls for a definition of IA at this juncture?
Is it true that good IA is invisible (Morville/Rosenfled)? Doesn’t this make a mockery of the concept of Information ‘Architecture’? Surely IA has to fundamentally deal with materiality, and has to be seen, in terms of visual design in order fo…
