Document length

In my search results, I will return a variety of documents with different document types, mostly pdf’s and html pages (maybe some word docs). I’d like to allow users to sort the results by document length, but I can’t figure out a common measure that will fairly represent the length of what they are about to read. Byte counts are inflated by…

Consent when doing remote testing or interviews

I’m curious about what people consider best practices for informed consent for user studies. In particular, I’m wondering what practices you use when conducting remote testing or telephone interviews.

Do you consider verbal agreement to be enough? Do you send consent forms and ask for signatures? Does anyone have advice for obtaining ele…

Rapid Prototyping

I have been using XHTML/CSS and Visio for rapid prototyping until Axure was recommended to me. What are some tools that are being used out there for rapid prototyping besides Dreamweaver, Visio, Illustrator, and Photoshop?

Millions of XML Sitemap generators... but what about XML Sitemap Diagramming tools?

I’m pulling out my hair.

I was assigned a mercy-kill project, they brought me in literally *after* QA arrived to “tidy up the UI”. Anyway, the application is built in IceFaces, ie AJAX. So there are literally just 2 webpages in the entire application, the login

Jorge, please!

I followed the RSS link to your article titled “Meet Your Peers” and my browser locked up tighter than a maximum-security prison at the hint of an escape plan.

Looking for advice

Hello,

I’m a newbie in the Interaction Design field – stumbled upon it after getting hired as a sound engineer at a start-up that’s building an interactive voice application for listening to podcasts.

Soon after joining the company I started prototyping different versions of the Audio UI, then there came the flow-charts,…

Forum functionality?

Am I missing something, or is there somewhere where the forum capabilities are described.

Specifically I was looking for a way to subscribe to email notification or digests of the forum posts. Short of that, a forum RSS feed. Do they exist?

Thanks,

Andrew

Should Boxes and Arrows run shorter stories?

Recent comments on extreme user testing suggest people would like shorter articles. Yet in these days of blog posts and twitters, where can you get deeper thoughtful commentary? What do you think? Should B&A shorten up? Or continue a william-shawn-esque long and deep look at UX?

How to mark 'optional' items in a wireframe

Hello,

When I’m creating wireframes, I often have to include elements that in most cases won’t appear on the final site. But they have to be included because they may be needed in some cases.

Is there some standard way to mark an element in a wireframe as “optional”?

Thank you!
Ben

Posting a form vs. editing the end restult

Hi there,

currently the state of the art posting seems still to be a posting form. For instance on eBay you have to fill out a form, then you can see the preview of your product posting and then you finally submit your product.

Still, on a few websites I’ve seen another model, where you don’t fill out a posting form, rather th…

Multi touch interface design: How will new technologies affect usability?

There are certain conventions out there. Our users have complex schemata and we, as designers, understand how to approach these mental models. I catch myself thinking of the new technologies breaking the horizon, in particular, the multi touch interfaces (iPhone, Jeff Han, etc.). Controls work differently when using these interfaces. Everyday our brains are mo…
