“Captain, I PROTEST! I am NOT a merry man…”

But seriously, folks…

I would articulate the context question as, “What’s NOT being said in this context?” Or, “What’s missing from this picture?” Discovering what is “understood,” as you say so rightly, requires metathinking—observing oneself in thought, and one can’t do that until one has been confronted with “other” thinking from another context.

We would need to map the negative space around the content, just as seeing negative space is critical to accurate drawing.

What kind of map would we have then? How would we use it?

Stephen

It’s funny: I’ve suddenly become the local “expert” on social media in my workplace, though I don’t think I know that much about it. The upper-ups ask me whether we should get into blogging and the like, and it would be helpful to point to some “hard data” about the effect of an organization’s fostering that kind of community spirit.

Principle #2: I don’t think you mean “infers.” I think you means “conveys” or “indicates.” “To infer” is to read something and to “get something out of it,” or to pick up the meaning that is “implied” but unstated. I wouldn’t normally point out issues of grammar, but in this case, I really had a hard time understanding what this principle was intending to convey.

On further reflection, I think you mean: “A user’s commitment to using the interface is only as great as the device’s screen size.” In other words, as screen size increases, so does the user’s commitment to using the application, and the same is true in reverse. I’m not sure that “state” is helpful in conveying this principle. Better to stick with simple English.
