What’s really interesting about this topic is not only are metaphors discarded, they somehow resurface many generations later. I’m looking forward to part 2. I’d like to get my hands on applying the methods…not only on the web world but in other settings/environments.

Useful in any environment. I’m wondering though if text messaging/IM have changed the way we have communicated…of course under a certain age. I will definitely commit them to memory and use often.

I agree with Patrick. Somehow the EIA has a certain need that involves referential and transactoinal information that isn’t just an intranet of what departments do but how different departments interact and transact like mini-businesses. I’m wondering if ther eis some way to look beyond the pixels and review the core objectives/business strategy for an EIA.

I’m not sure if they neglect entire segments on purpose so much as identifying what is the profitability of building for a particular market segment. I would imagine that during market/user research they are able to identify what truly would be most useful and of course doesn’t cost so much to be built. It’s all a balancing act.

I would be curious to hear about how they do this in Asia/Europe and what we’re not doing here…also what’s being done in research to get us caught up.

I’m actually curious about this because I had an experience with Netflix recently. I was going to sign up and partway through the process and then I jumped ship. I’m not sure if I was distracted and stepped away from my computer and forgot to complete it…however I started getting emails to remind me to return and complete the form. So I know they were tracking when I gave up. I’d like to see the stats behind and also see what consumer sites are doing to reel the user back.

This article would be great to show the western IA what’s shaking in Asia. I’d like to see more would be what is different about your observation in relation to what has already passed in the western IA world.

Like teachers managers have another responsibility…inspiring (removing the obstacles from your contributors so they can succeed)...

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” – William Ward

Erin, Great article. All of the points are relevant in many aspects of one’s life not just in a work environment. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing your experiences in the article. I’m so glad to see this topic start making the rounds in our profession. At some point I can see many in our profession make the gradual transition to either product management or even start their own businesses. It’s a very natural progression as long as we are open-minded to seeing the big picture and learn how a business is run.

Grant, very well-written, engaging, and thought provoking article. In some funny way I started thinking about the Meyers Briggs Test while reading the 3 accusations. Somehow I’ve noticed we all exhibit varying degrees of them and it really effects interactions with other IAs (and even non-IAs) because there’s some sense that I’m right, you have to listen to me attitude. While I was away from the “scene” for a couple of years and stepped back in, I arrived when all these accusations were flying around as topics of writings/conversations. At first not at all encouraging for me, however at the same time I believed there were opportunities that were forming and in some way your article has summed up some of my gut feeling when you described that “stillness.”
