I’d like to hear James’ thoughts on the topic – not only is EIA important as a practice, it also shows patterns of working across the enterprise, whether we’re designers, IAs, or otherwise involved in the process of creating great user experiences. Developing this business fluency is critical for effective work at the intersection of business goals and user needs.

Having spent a lot of time in the past looking at framing, and having talked with Sarah about her ideas recently, I’m excited to hear more. For me, framing is at the peak of design maturity (23kb pdf), and the more we learn about it, the better.

Hey Richard,

Thanks for the thoughts. I completely agree about speaking the language of business – I ran a panel on that exact topic at the 2005 IA Summit in Montreal. I’ve also written about business and design (particularly design maturity and business fluency) on my blog at www.bplusd.org and at Ambidextrous Magazine.

best,

Sarah, ditto for everything you’ve shared here (and wow, I’m quoted). I’ll add that we have pushed MindCanvas a bit and done a study with almost 600 participants (but that took some extra effort from the Uzanto team and there’s no guarantee we could do it again).
