Article Idea:

Rapid Internal Usability Testing

suggested by John Michael on 2007/06/28

I’d like to write and submitt an article about running a small internal usability lab where the majority of the recuiting happens from within the organization, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages and learnings. I am a usability manager for at&t wireless in Seattle Washington and have been working in UCD, Usability, and User Experience for over 10 years.

This sounds like a good idea. Most of the advice I’ve heard is to stay away from internal usability testing (unless you are designing for internal users) and I’d like to hear a more balanced analysis because sometimes all we can do is internal usability testing.

I agree with the benefits of internal usability studies and would like to see it fleshed out into a full article. In my organization, we have an internal group of people from various business units who fit the personas built around our external constituents. They match the demographic data we have on file as well as interests, passion models, etc., and have proved to be a great resource for quick focus group and usability testing.
