Article Idea:

Intranets - Need to improve UX hence Adoptions

suggested by Rajesh Rangarajan on 2007/04/08

There are have been enough articles on the role of an organization’s intranet in improving employee productivity and satisfaction. Inspite of of many such alarms, intranet is one of most neglected communications channels when it comes to User Experience.

This is largely due to the fact there are no tangible measures and the perceived ‘NO” impact on brand from the organizations stand point.

The usual ‘experience’ improvement includes window dressing or just change in visual elements.

So what are metrics that needs to be tracked to measure the sucess of intranets? What is the role of User Expereince Management in enabling User Adoptions? How to enhnce the UX?

This is a fundamental challenge in moving our Intranet forward – no company data to use in justifying redesigns, no convincing industry data. Where do we start? I’m looking forward to your take on this issue.

I think the basic flaw in design of an intranet is the comparison it receives with other applications. Intranet is really not one url, its the complete workflow and process enabler for the people (employees). Unlike normal applications that serve lesser number of needs and objectives, Intranet’s have the huge challenge of “managing the people experience” while they get things done.

I guess when we start looking at it as a tool to manage people’s experience in their 8-10 hour jobs in the company, can we come any close to actually designing it or even rating it.

Rohan, I agree with you.It is not just a url or just design changes. What we have create is a whole new experience which is radically diffreant from the exisiting matter of fact, transactional, mundae and unwanted information put inot one repository and titled as intranet. In most copamies the adoption is largely due to lack of choices or because it is a service pushed to employees.

I like this idea. Let me make a couple of suggestions? It would be great to 1) find some case studies on this and include them (I know they’re out there, I just can’t find my links right now) and 2) discuss the ROI—how much money can be *saved* by improving an intranet, especially its IA issues. It’s enormous… but often overlooked when budgeting for employee tools.

We could look at a current software package that promises to solve all intranet needs: Intranet Dashboard. I’m not advertising the product, but it would be good to know how they based their desicions for building each application / component.
