Article Idea:
IA for Nonprofits
suggested by Olga Sanchez-Howard on 2007/03/25
The nonprofit sector has suffered from the lack of user-centric design for many years. In the last few years nonprofits have come to understand that Usability is key to the success of their mission and are beginning to look for professionals skilled in these areas. But there are challenges. I’d like to share solutions and tools to address these challenges.

As an interaction designer for a software firm focused on non-profits, I would be very interested in this story.

I would love to see this! I’ve worked for several nonprofits and been their accidental techie and webmaster; it was a major influence in my decision to pursue my MSI in Human-Computer Interaction. Not-for-profit organizations have unique needs, goals, resources and constraints. An article on this topic is much-needed by the nonprofit community as well; I would suggest cross-polination with nonprofit-specific tech resources like TechSoup. If I can help to contribute to such an article, please let me know!
(and btw, it was really great to meet you at the IA Summit, Olga!)

This article needs to be written!! I spent 8 years as an innie in the nonprofit world (7 of those in web communications as a wanna-be IA) and having just moved over to for-profit consulting I can attest to the differences and how much the community at-large needs to hear about them. I’d be happy to share insights if you want them!

Hi Olga, I’m a Japanese IA, much interested in this idea. I have just found the article titled “Nonprofits and Technology”[1] at WorldChanging.com and it made me think over what we can do as IT pros. I really look forward to reading your story. Thank you.

Would be a very interesting article for us, since we are in the process of building an out-of-the-box implementation1 using TYPO3 open source Content Management System, for the non-profit sector, to empower them to have control on their own content publishing and management, with much superior technology and application than say Civic Space, while reducing the cost of such implementations.

I’m also interested in seeing articles written that illustrate the use of design in creating blueprints, or greater understanding of complex problems. I’ve started to create short essays that illustrate uses of maps and charts to connect leaders from business to youth in inner city neighborhoods. Recruiting talent from this industry would greatly enhance our work, and lead to more and better support of youth in every major city of the world. Visit the program locator and Tutor/Mentor Institute sections of http://www.tutormentorconnection.org to see these ideas illustrated.
