Article Idea:
Why we should NOT focus on user experience
suggested by Koen Claes on 2010/05/03
Yes, it’s no mistake: I’d like to convince you why we should NOT focus on user experience. Even as UX designers–and I’m one of you. An epiphany I experienced recently–no pun intended–changed my perspective on UX design. If given the opportunity (vote “Yes!” below), I’ll be happy to elaborate on how and why that happened; or why I disagree when Jason Fried states: “Cool is a detail, useful is a quality.” My essay’s narrative is ready. Ready to be written down. It covers behavioral psychology, storytelling, Nobel prize winning research, and includes examples from Benetton’s chock ads to patients experiencing colonoscopies to Apu from The Simpsons. Interested? Then please vote “Yes!” below.

I’d love to read this story. As a designer with a decade’s worth of expertise and industry stories … I feel that any attempt to put too much emphasis on scientific formula, too much trust in ‘the data’, can totally drive design processes into dead ends that can economically drain an organization and ultimately diminish the human experience of a design team.
But I would love to hear you’re insight. Looking forward to it.

I’m a firm believer in UX and user centered design – but I love also controversial discussions.
And if I can get more insides about Apu’s Kwik-E-mart – I would be the luckiest person :-)
