Article Idea:
The Machine is Us... or, How to Create an Experience When the Experience is Elsewhere
suggested by Beth Koloski on 2007/02/21
If you’ve seen this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gmP4nk0EOE
the idea the “the machine is us” may have gotten under your skin.
If you’re thinking about designing experiences online, you’re also struggling with the idea of creating an immersive experience on a web site vs. harnessing the power of, or competing with all the blogs/MySpace’s/profiles/etc… the whole world of user generated content. You believe in it, but when faced with recommending appraoches to promote a brand online, you’re not sure how to harness it.
My idea is this: Quit trying to design the experience. The real experience is a million other places. Facililatate the creation of authentic experience by feeding the machine *tasty*, *portable*, *personalizable* seeds of content.

This could be really cool and tasty, portable, and personalizable is intriguing. I’ve recommended social platforms to brands before with limited success. Much of this has to do with a fear of turning brand control over to customer on a Web platform the company operates. I would love to hear your ideas on the subject because I’ve had difficulty explaining that social media is already “happening” to brands, whether they build for it or not.
