Article Idea:

Using Web Analytics to inform design

suggested by Braden Hoeppner on 2005/12/23

Here’s an idea for a story that I think will be a topic of interest in 2006.

With the maturing of web analytics, the time has come where designers need to know how to leverage visitor data to inform design. When re-architecting a website, traditional usability measures will inform some elements of design, but what about the patterns that your visitors have been showing you each time they visit your site (when they aren’t in your usability lab)?

Using this type of data to inform design will ensure that new design elements are put in place to enhance user experience, and drive visitor conversion – not just to satisfy someone’s need to ‘put that flash module on the homepage’.

I recently wrote a research paper for a master’s course in information architecture entitled, “Metrics to Validate Heuristics: Proving the Information Architect’s Case;” it discusses web analytic measures to validate Rubinoff’s user experience audit statements. The instructor suggested that I should seek submission for it here, and it would seem that there is a demand so I’ll have to make some revisions and give it a shot.

It’s a very hot issue in Denmark – a international angle would be nice. Plz post your research paper… I have a short essay (currently in Danish) that I will translate to Danglish. Maybe some of you english-speaking-members would help me and change from danglish to english? (c:

The agency I work for is currently using web analytics data to devise software that provides segmented audiences with random generated variables of interfece, graphics, and messaging. This in turn produces more data that give the client input as to what types of media produce more results. This then helps provide high level design direction for targeted productivity.
