Article Idea:
Designing for Hand Held Devices
suggested by afshan kirmani on 2008/01/07
Let’s say that you’ve created a user interface design on the computer screen and soon after connecting it to the hand held device to see it, you realize that there several problems that you didn’t see coming. Yea, we’ve been there! But with this article that I propose, we can move away from the blatant errors that should not be occurring while designing for a hand held device. The pointers that I aim to cover in the article include:
- Getting the user interface finalized from the client as soon as possible
- Using bright colors, even if it means changing the brand guidelines
- Using contrasting colors
- Looking at a big picture: creating big icons, images and text
- Creating meaningful icons without help text
- Implementing Mouse over Interaction
- Working closely with your developer
- Iterating less; evaluating more
Would you like something more covered? Post in a comment. :)

Hi,
This would definitely an informative article that I would like to read.
One more point you can cover is the balance between the heavy graphics usage and the effectiveness of the network that will be used. This makes a vital point; as the hand held devices will be accesing servers through some kind of browser or console. And you are providing the product interface on hand held devices to assit user while they are on go. In such cases, graphical components taking time to load and user waiting for them is quite an irritaing experience. As a result, testing the UI for hand held devices with the networks that possibly will be used is a must.
