Article Idea:
The design glass box
suggested by Ryan Scherf on 2007/09/28
Sometimes when designing, we hit a wall. That wall may be creative, but many times it is often a wall of superiors all having different ideas of how things should look. Often times, this look may not be what you have planned in your head or in your notebook.
I worked at a large company where the famous words of a CEO were “just make it look like f*ing WebMD” when speaking in terms of a health and wellness website they were trying to developer. This doesn’t leave much room for creativity for a designer.
In this article, I would like to address the issues of designing within a vision, as well as receiving constant input about theme and imagery to which the theme may not be the designers style.

Oh I understand. I traded boss(es) for self employment as a freelancer. I gained clients who were basically the same thing as a boss. Selling creative services is difficult because creativity is so personal. I got to a point where I stopped using a portfolio of work samples because it wasn’t my vision. I instead used my creativity to persuade clients to at least be effective in their marketing collateral and I was able to take pride in that. Self employment is more difficult than a job but the saving grace when you are on your own you can choose who your clients are. I can also design my own products or projects and apply my style there.

A lovely serendipitous mistake today: I was looking for Innovators’ Network (startups and such … a nice compliment to FoundRead) and came across Innovate on Purpose. That might be a good source for exchange / anecdotes.
