Article Idea:
Bad UX
suggested by BaldShark - on 2007/08/28
Im wondering why a site that’s by designers, and for designers is so poorly designed itself.
Strange issues:
1. I log in, see my name at the top. I click on Job (for example), my name disappears from the top, and the main nav text gets smaller.
2. On the jobs page, since it no longer says my name at the top as logged in…it’s confusing that it now says “log in” in the gray bar at the top…but wait, that’s just to log in to “post” an ad…what? The Post An Ad link is below the sign in, not connected in any way to the “log in” link. Strange.
3. Speaking of the jobs area. The way the jobs are presented is pretty useless. You cant filter by anything that makes sense, like “city.” Huh? It’s a long laundry list of jobs, and that’s it. The tag cloud is also useless without any meaningful filtering.
4. The people section has the same problems as the Jobs section. Simply just a long laundry list of people with no meaningful way to filter.
Not to mention the fact that many many times I get error pages for no reason…just clicking around, or trying to post this idea. I was actually looking for a place to comment on this site, but that’s not here either.
Perhaps I dont use this site enough, but I think it really should be an example of the “correct” way to do things.
Thanks,
Brett

If you stare at the copy on the jobs page it Does mention that you need a separate login for posting in the jobs area. I agree that the dropping of the login status in the header is distracting, but my guess is that designers chose this route over displaying a ‘you are logged in as..’ and a ‘login’ on the same page.
Often times designs evolve and create a/b decisions that you really wish you had a c or d option on. Very often backing out of the problem (a good UX modeling tool) is costly. (having to back out and redesign other pages). In this case it seems they chose to message on the page, and since it’s not terribly dysfunctional, they chose this path.

We take volunteer effort. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s less-good. Sometimes it’s just as good as you could expect from someone who is very smart but only had a couple hours to work on it. It’s easy to criticize, but hard to find the time to get it right. As we make money, maybe we’ll actually be able to pay for people to get it right. Then again, sometiems it is right, and people will still think it’s wrong. Because “right” is subjective.
