Article Idea:
When Agile becomes Fragile
suggested by James Kelway on 2007/08/17
Agile is great for existing products, to tune and enhance the online experience by a series of iterative changes. But what about the redesign of a site , where wholesale changes require a different approach and how does a UCD approach fit within an Agile approach?
This article will set out the stall and use several case studies to try and show how both Agile and UCD can play well together and how a new site may mean a new approach

Arno Penzias … head of R&D at AT&T, researcher (discoverer?) of dark background cosmic radiation … prolly a good poker player … anyhow: he had this idea of “setting up for failure” where projects were tested with minimum resources and (consequently?) no ego investment. Just how they fell over or burst into flames was, when properly conducted, very telling.
It seems to me that agile should perform wonderfully in a near chaotic situation when invisible variables might come into play in flocks. But that’s no more than a hunch on my part.

Hi Ben
This article is in the pipeline and will certainly feature invisible variables. It is those variables that can impose fragility to the Agile environment but by embracing UCD ethos and a number of other elements agile can still be a force for good in development culture. I will use a case study to illustrate this – which is due to launch in the next 2 weeks…
Cheers
James

Having been in a team that has sufered with this clash, and are still trying to get UCD/Agile to “play nicely”, did this article ever get published – very keen to read it, as any insight is good insight at this point
